OSHKOSH T'AI CHI CENTER
Andy Mertens teaches classes at both the Oshkosh T'ai Chi Center, 803 Waugoo Ave., Oshkosh, WI 54901, as well as the Oshkosh Senior Center located at 200 N. Campbell Rd., Oshkosh, WI 54902. Class focuses on several forms of T'ai Chi stretching, self defense, Chinese medicine and Qi gong.
"Softness triumphs over hardness, feebleness over strength. What is more malleable is always superior over that which is immovable. This is the principle of controlling things by going along with them, of mastery through adaptation." - Lao Tzu
Located in the Stevens Park neighborhood, the Oshkosh T'ai Chi Center is a place dedicated to the art of T'ai Chi as a means to improve the health of the community, by teaching individuals to embody the principals of what the Chinese call the "Supreme Ultimate." According to Professor Cheng Man-Ch’ing, "T’ai Chi is both an integrated exercise and an enjoyable sport for all: rich and poor, strong and weak, young and old, male and female. Weather does not inhibit its practice. Requirements of time and space are minimal. If one has a space approximately four feet on a side and can spare ten minutes a day, he can practice T’ai Chi without spending a cent."
Presenting TWO unique yoga classes:
In this class, Justine Beck guides students through elements of yoga, breathing techniques and creative journaling. Class often begins with a "free write" or journal prompt providing a moment to transition. Justine leads students through a slower-paced practice to discover safety, curiosity and presence within each stretch, movement or pause. In a restorative, non-routine format, students have space to explore sensation, to reconnect with their breath and to give themselves something more tangible to grasp. Creative journaling exercises are often dispersed around the physical practice. BEGINNERS are excellent candidates for this class, in addition to those in need of balance from a fast-paced lifestyle or those healing from limitations.
